Archaic English, decoded
For older poems, plays, and fiction: translate the grammar first, then interpret the meaning.
43 of 93 forms link to a context-checked SAT question example. Click a linked word or excerpt to open the full question and highlight the word. “Answer choice” means the word occurs in an option; that option is not necessarily correct. Unmatched forms remain reference-only. Three connectors link to clearly labeled supplemental nonliterary SAT reading examples.
1 · The pronoun shortcut
thou = you doing · thee = you receiving
thy = your · thine = yours
Thine and mine can also precede nouns, often before vowel sounds. Thou may signal intimacy, social rank, or contempt; infer tone from the relationship. Ye and you vary by period.
2 · Decode verb endings
With thou, -st / -est often marks “you.” With he/she/it, -th / -eth usually corresponds to present-tense “-s.” These endings do not automatically mean past tense.
“Thinkest thou?” → “Do you think?”
“I know not.” → “I do not know.”
3 · Restore normal word order
“To thee my thanks I give.”
→ “I give my thanks to you.”
Find who + does what + to whom. A poetic line break is not necessarily the end of a sentence; follow the punctuation.
4 · Avoid meaning traps
Wherefore = why, not where.
Wont ≠ won’t: “was wont to” = used to.
Ever and anon = from time to time.
Good morrow = good morning.
A familiar spelling may have several meanings. Check the example’s context, not just the matching letters.
